Our minds, our bodies and our souls all have to be fed, nurtured and cared for on a regular basis. Which raises the questions of what’s depleting us and how do we restore our minds, bodies and soul.
Think about it.
Making too many decisions, anticipating a crucial conversation or analyzing a fix to a problem are mentally depleting. Granted, we all have our pressure points but those things I just listed are ones we all have faced at some point. Mental depletion is overwhelming and stressful, specifically if you’re the one looked at to solve the problem.
So what do you do?
You stop, you pause and you hydrate. You restore your mind with stillness and quiet. Blocking out all of the noise and all of the ‘if I was yous’ so you can think clearly or not think about anything at all for a while. This allows your mind to reset. Getting lost in mindless activities releases the tension of what’s weighing heavy on your thoughts. Pour back into yourself.
Our bodies feel depletion when we sleep but don’t rest, compartmentalize tension all day and maintain bad eating habits. It’s not realistic to think we can maintain all of that and expect our bodies not to have some kind of reaction. Headaches, hives, weight gain – depletions on top of depletions.
We have to give ourselves permission to pause, hydrate and restore ourselves. We restore ourselves when we get engaged and conscious about what we eat, exercising, and keeping routine medical appointments. Additionally, sometimes little things like daily exercise can add great value to your sleep.
Mind, body and soul — we said it from the start, but so far we’ve only covered two.
What do you do when your mind and body are being nurtured but you’re still feeling like something’s missing? Your soul is hungry.
For me, it’s God. Plain and simple. That closeness with Him, that peace that doesn’t even make sense on paper because nothing around me changed but I feel different — that’s what fills my soul. I find it most when I’m sewing. Hands moving, fabric in front of me, mind quiet enough to just be present with Him. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t always look like prayer. Sometimes it looks like thread, fabric, and a little bit of stillness. But it’s still Him. Every time.
Maybe for you it’s not sewing. Maybe it’s not even God, yet. But you know that feeling. The one that shows up when everything else is met and you’re still not full. That’s your soul talking, and it doesn’t whisper forever. Pay attention to what quiets it — it’ll save your life.
Our minds, bodies and souls have to eat. They have to be nurtured regularly. To lack on any of the three is a disservice to yourself, and it’ll cost you a hidden tax you never agreed to pay.
