For the longest, I thought obedience to God meant doing what I heard Him tell me to do at the time. I never really gave much thought to whether I could hear God’s voice or not, but I guess that tells you how much thought I put into obedience in the first place… until now.
Y’all know I’ve been trying to read my Bible more, and after reading multiple scriptures, I’ve found that obedience is tied to submitting to God’s Word. Not just hearing what He says, but actually doing what His Word says. It also suggests that obedience is a way of expressing love for God. Things like following Him wholeheartedly, serving others, and seeking His guidance, to name a few.
Some of those things come easy to me. Some I’m currently practicing. And some… I don’t know about.
Maybe my spiritual maturity isn’t where it needs to be yet to fully understand loving others the way He loves me. I mean, it’s easy for me to say I love people I don’t know. It’s easy for me to say I love people I like.
But what if I don’t like you?
How deep does this love need to be exactly?
Because if someone I don’t like catches on fire and I don’t grab the water hose, but I call 911… does that count?
I think I underestimated what obedience to God actually meant.
It’s a work in progress, even for the things I consider easy, because I still have to be consistent. This is one of those times I’m grateful that God is strong where I’m weak and that He sees my heart, because I’ll die trying to get these things right.
