Weekly Squirts

Check out how things went down last week…

The RealReal opened their first permanent flagship on 80 Wooster Street in New York. After much success from the 2016 holiday pop-up, it seemed fitting for the retailer to plant roots on familiar turf. RealReal’s CEO and founder, Julie Wainwright stated, “After much success from The RealReal’s pop-up shop in New York last holiday season, we’re ready to expand our e-commerce business to a permanent brick-and-mortar space as another touchpoint for our customers and consignors. We not only created a concept store that represents The RealReal with the best product, but we created a next-level customer experience for buyers and consignors that leverages the speed of e-commerce with the brand experience of brick-and-mortar.” The new flagship retails for both men and women, home furnishings, and even an outdoor space for the spring and summer months. The consignment merchant has recently received $150 million from Great Hill Partners, which allowed this business move to happen, but don’t rest on the retailer just yet. As they have also announced expanding to Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Manhattan, Washington D.C., Miami, and Los Angeles.

Congratulations to pro tennis player Serena Williams and the founder of Reddit, Alexis Ohanian who tied the knot at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans this weekend. The evening was filled with fairytale fantasies, beginning with Serena’s Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen ball gown, a special performance from New Edition, an evening finisher of an all-white carousel for the guests to ride, with 90’s music draping the entire night. Guests included Vogue’s Anna Wintour, Beyoncé, Tina Lawson, Ciara, LaLa Anthony, Kelly Rowland, and Kim Kardashian.

Japanese retailer, Muji has announced the opening of a new location on Vancouver’s Robson Street. The retailer already has over five stores throughout Canada, but this particular ‘brick and mortar’ will make for the retailer’s largest flagship outside of Asia. President of Muji Canada, Toru Akita made a news statement stating, “This year marks a big step for Muji Canada as we finally expanded to Western Canada and we will soon open our first flagship store. The goal of the Robson Street store is to deepen our relationships with local communities while offering new services and products in a distinctive retail space. In addition, by creating a relaxing environment with coffee, books and plants, we hope to help customers to make better choices toward creating their own pleasant lifestyle.”

Drew Barrymore opened her first Dear Drew pop-up on 14 Crosby Street in NYC last Wednesday. This temporary flagship comes, after the initial launch on Amazon just this past October. The store carries a home-like ambiance, with vintage furnishings throughout. You can expect to see her first ready-to-wear collection and accessories, retailing from $28 to $248. The pop-up will remain active a total of six months, so if you’re in the NYC area you should go see what’s up, but if not check it out online.

Simon Properties has announced plans to remodel Atlanta’s Phipps Plaza. Simon’s VP of Development and Asset Intensification, Patrick Peterman stated, “Today’s exciting news without question enhances Phipps Plaza as the luxury destination of choice for shopping, dining, entertainment, and hospitality in Atlanta and the entire Southeast,” The mall is already anchored in luxury with Bally, Saks Fifth Avenue, Versace, Hugo Boss, and Gucci to name a few. However, additions such as the Nobu hotel and restaurant, as well as a prestige fitness center and office tower will add even more value to the upscale shopping center. The people of the Buchkead district can expect construction to last from 2018 to 2020.

Fei Fei Sun is the new face for Estée Lauder . The model made the announcement via Instagram last week stating “I am thrilled to announce that I am @esteelauder ‘s newest #EsteeModel! So happy to be joining the #EsteeLauder family.” She joins modeling peers Joan Smalls and Kendall Jenner, along with Yang Ming and Misty Copeland who are also ambassadors for the beauty retailer. Sun has breathed success all year with three Vogue cover appearances and has starred in campaigns for Tory Burch, Valentino, and Swarovski. She stated, “Growing up in China, I never believed I would represent such an iconic beauty brand. This is a dream come true.” Expect to see the debuts of the Fei Fei Sun x Estée Lauder collaboration next month.

Vans and the Fear of God label have joined forces for a two-way collaboration. The first part of the collaborated bundle is the Vans x Fear of God collection which features three suede 47DX slip-ons with canvas uppers. The second part is the Vans x F.O.G. collection which comes in the Mountain Edition 35DX and Era 95DX silhouettes, covered in canvas and corduroy with suede uppers. Unfortunately, this collaboration is only retailing at select Vans retailer, and I have to tell you, NO ONE is sleeping on these kicks. The Good Will Out sold out on the release day which was this past Friday, but last I checked Pacsun still had some available, so don’t BS on this one.

Beginning December 16th until the morning of Christmas Eve Nordstroms will launch their holiday 24/7 Curbside Pickup. The way the Pickup will work is, when the customer places their online order there will be a pick-up option to select. Once the purchase has been completed the customer will receive an email with a phone number to call or text. Here’s the really good part, once the customer arrives someone will bring the order out to their car – 24/7. <dropped microphone> This innovative launch gives the retailer good traction against their competitors, and nothing makes consumer’s smile brighter than shopping convenience. Which happens to be exactly what Nordstroms’ SVP of Customer Experience, Shea Jensen has set out to do stating, “Customers increasingly want to shop where, how, and when they choose and 24/7 Curbside Pickup is one service we’re offering to support their experience.” Select cities such as Seattle, San Diego, New York, San Jose, Chicago, Dallas, Virginia, Costa Mesa, and Bellevue, WA will be the fortunate ones taking advantage of this holiday shopper’s convenience. Only time will tell if 24/7 Curbside Pickup will play the part of a seasonal advantage or a new implementation into the flow of business.

Forever 21 made an announcement regarding a security breach last Tuesday. The retailer currently has over 815 stores across 57 countries, but failed to mention which one of their stores were affected. With that said ‘tis the season’ guys, so be careful as you venture out to do your holiday shopping. I always feel compelled to carry more cash [with boxcutter in tow] to avoid these types of situations. The only glitch with my plan is that the online sales with free shipping be calling a sistah – shopper’s holiday challenges.
