H&M Features the First Hijab

So how cool was it for H&M, the world’s 2nd largest retailer to hire a model wearing a hijab. For some of you hearing about this for the first time might be thinking, “Okay, now what?” I know that was me too. That is, until I realized that no one had ever featured a Muslim model with a hijab.  Seeing women in hijabs are such a norm in today’s society, it never even dawned on me that I’d never seen it before.

When Mariah Idrissi was asked to feature in a fashion video her reply was, “Are you sure they know I wear a hijab?” During a telephone interview, she was asked why she thought H&M were okay with her hijab she replied, “It might be because hijab fashion has boomed in the last few years and to finally see a hijabi [a woman who wears a hijab] in mainstream fashion is a big achievement,”

150929150007-hm-hijab-model-large-169Mariah was born and raised in London to a Pakistani mother and a Moroccan father. It wasn’t until she was 17 when she decided to start wearing a hijabi. “Being a Muslim or not, I’ve always had interests naturally in history or religious studies,” she says. “I spent 10 years in Islamic school, that is a big factor, plus doing the Nasheeds as a teenager made me closer to my faith. I’ve always had elements of Islam in my life.”

This is definitely a huge achievement for her as well as all Muslim women, rock on Trendsetters!

'Hijab fashion has boomed in the last few years,' Idrissi says.
